Georgetown, S.C March 30th,  2015 — Waccamaw Regional Council of Government’s Area Agency on Aging is gearing up for the eighth annual Waccamaw Sports Classic, which will take place April 10, 2015, from 9:00 to 3:00 on the campus of Coastal Carolina University. The event is for seniors from Georgetown, Horry, and Williamsburg County. The day-long Sports Classic includes friendly sporting competitions, educational sessions, and social events. Students from the university will lead sports programs such as track and field, corn hole, pickle ball, spin casting, and much more. Early registration has closed, however if a senior wants to participate, they can register the day of the event at Coastal Carolina University.

In addition to the benefits for seniors, the implementation of a Sports Classic Program, in the Waccamaw region, strengthens the region’s senior programming for older adults. Through this event community service groups, volunteers and sponsoring organizations/corporations work together to plan for, and actively promote, healthy aging for all seniors.

The Waccamaw Sports Classic is the result of a community partnership consisting of Horry County Parks and Recreation, Waccamaw Regional Council of Governments, Georgetown County Parks and Recreation, Coastal Carolina University, Tidelands Health, Conway Medical Center, Agape, Horry County Council on Aging, Strand Orthopaedics, Carolina Orthopaedics, Vital Aging of Williamsburg County, Georgetown Bureau of Aging Services, and Williamsburg County Parks and Recreation.  The games are sanctioned by the S.C. Senior Sports Classic and National Senior Games Association. The mission of the partnership is to promote physical fitness among the tri-county region’s senior population.
